HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is a virus that attacks the immune system and weakens the ability to fight off infections and certain cancers. If left untreated, HIV can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV is primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. There is currently no cure for HIV, but there are antiretroviral therapy (ART) drugs that can help manage the virus and prolong the lives of those living with HIV.
